Yes Sgt. Ed. It was D*** cold at Eielson, especially when a KC-97 is parked in front of your aircraft running up the engines on a cold Feb. day in 1959! That was the day that I had three ground heaters pointed at me and still shivering trying to do my job on that B-47. My first shirt told me before I went that it was a dry cold so I wouldn't feel it, B.S.!!!!

To all those airplane mechanics out there, present and past. You are among the unsung heroes of the Air Force. Working outside in some of the most foul weather keeping those airplanes flying. Whether frying you skin on hot airplanes, or having your skin sticking to frozen metal, your dedication to duty provided the successful completion of the Air force mission. I used to watch those mechanics on the flightline at Eielson and wondered if I could have stood that kind of working condition. Those near-Arctic conditions could be brutal. Wrestling those big R-4360's on those WB-50's was a herculean effort. I am certain those same conditions were overcome at all our northern bases. Thanks for your dedication.

At Newcastle we had a civilian gal, named Carolyn, who was a secretary in the hangar office. A really well built one too (the secretary not the office.) Having a few recips in the hangar led some of the old, crusty buggers to call her Carolyn Mag Check. Us jet guys always wondered why. Now that I think about it, maybe it should have been Carolyn Cylinders.

Talking about engines, the R3350s on our B-29 still leak oil after all these years. Last flew in June 1959. First thing I do when I go in the hangar is to get a paper towel and wipe up the oil drips under the engines so our visitors won't slip and fall. This B-29 had 33 missions over Japan during the war, 32 combat missions and the 33rd was when the surrender ceremony was being held on the Missouri it was part of a thousand aircraft that overflew the ceremony. A lot of history with this old bird. Come visit her, she loves company.

Ralph, I'm surprised an old salt like you don't know what a "Jug" is, It's a Cylinder on a reciprocating engine,like R-985, 8 cyl's, R-2800 18 cyls , R-33850 Compound's with Power Recovery Turbos R-4360-28cyls. Worked on many of them, in 9 Years Afsc-43132-E.

OK all you A & E guys. Here is something scary. I was extened ( in Alaska) as there were no Powermen (Diesel Mechs) at that time to replace us. So the base we were going to was changed. I was suppose to go to Great Falls Mont. Instead they sent me to Robins AFB in Georgia to an Aircraft Maintenance Outfit. The only experience I had on aircraft I flew in them. The first day I went out on the line my crew chief told me to go out on the outside port engine and pull number 5 jug. They were working on a C-124. I said "OK what the hell is a jug"? I bounce around on the line doing things I had no idea what I was doing working on C-124's and B-29's. Then crewing on a C-47 for a short while and ending up working in an office. During this time I got my third stripe why I don't know. Soon after the office bit I was transfered to a LORAN Detachment in Florida where I was back in my AFSC and had the best assignment and finished out my enlistment. I still have one question what is a JUG?

Good Friends - Before I forget to do so (you all know how it is at our ages) I need to tell you about a new free telephone service from the Google people. I just signed up for a free Internet voice phone account using gmail (also free). I tested it by calling to a good friend at his home telephone. It worked like a champ. The service gives you toll free phone calling to any phone in the U.S.. Now, that is pretty hard to beat. Unlike some other Internet phone deals, the conversation on this one was just like talking together on a regular phone system - like, folks could talk at the same time and both could hear what each was trying to say - no pausing to wait for the other one to finish talking - same as with a regular phone call. Sure was nice to learn about this deal. Have fun!
