Yeah, I remember those day of crawling out of the cockpit through the open canopy and sliding back across the canopy to check out the panels along the the top of the fuselage. Today, I'm lucky if I can go up a ladder one step at a time! Sure I'll help those guys out, I'll stand by the tool box and hand them a wrench now and then, if it ain't too heavy.

The main reason we had to use a mallet at times was the antiquated "cherry picker" we had. It was evidently left over from WWI when they used it to change engines on the Spad. My buddy Dave Johnson was the usual operator and he explained that "Herky Jerky" had an indelicate habit of either lifting up suddenly or dropping and it wasn't his fault. He did get a few swear words passed his way anyhow. Scared the h*^^ out of us a few times when after the pins were pulled the engine would drop a couple inches then suddenly stop.
Ah yes, can still smell JP-4 and the smoke ....... wonderful flight line memories.

ON THE B47 AND B52 POD ENGINES WERECONNECTED WITH A TOP MOUNT, A REAR MOUNT, AND A MOUNT TO THE LOWER FIRE WALL. YOU COULD TAKE AN ENGINE SPREADER BAR INSTALL IT BETWEEN THE TWO ENGINES REMOVE THE PIN ON THE LOWER MOUNT ON THE FIRE WALL AND SPREAD THE ENGINES. IT WAS SOMETIMES CALLED THE ANTI-ROTATION PIN.
HOPE THIS HELPS YOUR MEMORY.

Jim, there were some pins on the B-47 that required a hammer to get out, actually most needed to be hammered out. The wing tanks on the other hand had two pins, if I remember correctly (We called them something else, but this is a family site). Those pins were grooved so that if they needed to drop the tanks they would slide right off when the explosive charge in tail piece was triggered.
I've looked at several sites but I can't find anything regarding the separation of the two inboard engines. I remember the type of hoist that was used, even have a photo of it in the book by Alwyn T. Lloyd about the B-47, but that's about it.

Bill .... I think it was called "Hammer it out and don't let it fall." I was involved in a good many engine changes on '52s and '135s and had to use a mallet every now and then.
But, I agree with you and Phil that the old brain cells are a touch foggy, so it could have had some official AF nomeclature.

Phil, I know we are all old and losing it, but, on occasion a spark goes off in the old gray matter that brings back a memory or two. I was only involved in the replacement of one inboard engine and then it was only to assist the crew from the engine shop who did the actual replacement. I think that was in 1956, a looooong time ago!!!! I'm not even sure there is a name for the removal of the pin, perhaps Ben might know.

Bill, you're asking this group to REMEMBER? I can't remember when I get up off my duff and go into another room to do something-- I turn around and sit back down and hope it comes to me. And sometimes it does!!!!!!!!!!
